GYA were appointed to work with the owners to reimagine their ‘mundane’ 1960’s bungalow on the edge of Totnes. We originally reviewed options for the design of a replacement new dwelling but the discovery of asbestos insultation around an innovative American ‘system’ build meant a different approach was required following increased costs and programme delays. Our client also became increasingly concerned by the environmental impact of demolition.
This led to the development of an alternative strategy to retain and over-clad the existing building with high performance insulation and timber cladding coupled with a large new extension and new glazing throughout. The resultant open plan living / kitchen / dining spaces have large windows framing views of the garden and surrounding countryside with glazed doors spilling out onto two new terraces and on to the mature gardens below.
