Netherton Cottages

This new garden annexe sits on the footprint of a former building in the south west corner of the garden. Internally, the annexe is planned in a simple, linear fashion to house key functions. The primary internal spaces are located along the southern boundary, facing back into to the garden towards the main house, while ancillary elements are housed in a subservient, perpendicular wing along the western boundary.

The primary studio space occupies the eastern portion of the main range with a smaller home office to the west separated by an entrance lobby with shower room and bed-deck over. The main studio space benefits from a discreet sleeping alcove and intermittent glazed double doors which open out on to the garden. The northern ancillary range accommodates a large, open fronted workshop to the south and secure garden store adjacent.

The elevations have been designed as a unified ‘family’ of elements to create a clear hierarchy of function. Finishes are simple and detailing crisp to reflect a clean, stripped down vernacular language. The natural material palette will help conceal the building within its mature garden setting and minimise any visual contrast with the wider landscape context.
