GYA were commissioned to design a new quayside office building, occupying a prominent site on the banks of the River Dart to house the marina’s berthing and service office functions for access by existing and visiting berth holders.
The new of office building occupies an overall gross internal area of some 67 sqm with an equipment and dry store to the south. The proposed new building sits along the edge of the quayside to ensure staff retain a clear view of the river and marina pontoons. The new building is constructed using traditional timber frame construction with douglas fir used throughout to minimise loading on the suspended concrete slab which forms the quayside apron.
The new building has been specifically designed to accommodate the requirements of the berthing and service office functions of the marina. It forms a bright, airy and inviting first point of contact for berth holders as they enter the marina via a covered portal at the head of the access walkway. The overall building design is very clean and simple and of a traditional construction which evokes age-old boat building techniques. An over-sailing pitched roof provides shelter to entrances and pedestrian routes while preventing roosting opportunities for seagulls and providing shade during summer months.
